Top things to do with the family in Galway

We have picked out some of our favourite things to do in Galway. There is something to keep everyone in the family happy, with beautiful beaches and parks to explore you will come back from your break feeling fully refreshed. We have of course included some fun indoor activities for you to choose from for those rainy days

Outdoor Adventures

Burren Nature Sanctuary

Burren Nature Sanctuary in Kinvara is the perfect place to take the kids when the sun is shining. There you can learn about the natural history of The Burren and all about its flora, fauna and karst geology. The kids can explore, discover and follow along the winding tracks of the fairy woodlands trails. While there, you may come across some Shetland ponies, alpacas and goats. Tire the kids out with the choice of an indoor play area or outdoor playground.

Rathbraun Farm

Rathbraun Farm is a 35-minute drive from the family friendly Maldron Hotel Galway, Sandy Road, located in Ardrahan. While there you can tour the farm, barns and farmyard or sign up for some traditional Irish baking with a scone making class. Also visit the farmhouse with its original thatched roof and stone walls. Activities at the farm include bottle feeding the baby lambs, sheering some sheep and see a sheep dog demonstration. Dinner is available with traditional Irish music playing.

Curry’s Fun Park

Curry’s Fun Park is located in Salthill a 10-minute drive from Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway. Curry’s Fun Park is a great activity for a family to do on a sunny day with something for the whole family from young to old. At the park choose from the Ferris wheel, Merry Go-Round, fun house, bumper cars, Waltzers, flying elephants and much more. The electric atmosphere will excite the kids and the big kids. Curry’s Fun Park is opening daily during the summer from 12.00pm.

Beach Days

Galway is surrounded by some beautiful beaches, with some being a short walk from the hotel and others being a 20-minute drive, but each as scenic as the next. The closest beach to the hotel is in Salthill, made up of 3 separate beaches. A very popular area of Salthill is the Blackrock diving boards, only the brave ones will make the jump from the top. Just 3 kilometres from Salthill there is a beach with stunning views of Galway Bay, offering a perfect day out to families.

Indoor Fun

Planet Entertainment

Planet Entertainment has something for the whole family of all ages to enjoy and keep busy on a miserable day. Enjoy ten pin bowling or laser tag if you are a family who are competitive. For the smaller children, they can enjoy the ball pit with slides to keep them busy. Planet Entertainment is situated at Galway Shopping Centre on the Headford Road and is just a 5-minute drive from Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway.

IMC Cinema

IMC Cinema is the perfect hideout for any family on a rainy day. Escape the rain and stock up on your favourite treats while watching the newest film releases on the big screen. The IMC cinema is located at the Galway Retail Park on the Headford Road, only a 5-minute drive from Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway.

Treasure Island

Treasure Island Kids Zone is the perfect busy activity to take the children on a rainy day. Let the kids run wild, enjoying several slides including their Big Blue slide and exploring the secret tunnels.  If your kids are competitive then the race car track is a perfect activity for them. Treasure Island Kids Zone is located at Merlin Park Industrial Estate and is just a short 10- minute drive from Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway.

Jumplanes

Jumplanes is the ideal place to bring energetic kids over 5 years to on a rainy day. They can literally bounce off the walls on loads of trampolines or enjoy an indoor ice rink in the middle of summer. The staff organise indoor games including dodgeball or football pool. Jumplanes is situated on the Monivea Road a 10-minute drive from Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway.

Pure Skill

If you’re looking to burn some energy, Pure Skill is the perfect place to go, with it being the first of its kind in the world. Using fully automated technology, you compete in 10 different sporting challenges and try to get a score out of 100, bringing lots of competitiveness into the 2-hour game. The circuit is suitable for anyone above the age of 8 years old and pre-booking is essential. Pure Skill is only a 10-minute drive from the hotel with public transport located a short walk away and taxis easily arranged by our reception team.

    What’s the best way to get to the hotel from the airport?

    Dublin airport – Galway: There are buses running from 5 am until 12:30 am each day with gobus, citylink and bus Eireann. You can also get a taxi to Heuston station if you wish to take the train from 7:35 am to 7:35 pm.

    Shannon airport – Galway: Bus Eireann runs a bus from 7:10 am until 10 pm every day.

    Knock airport – Galway: Bus Eireann runs a bus from 8:55 am until 8 pm every day.

    The train and bus station are located just a 15-minute walk from us here with a taxi costing between 6 – 9 euro.

    Does a public bus service pass by Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway?

    Yes, the 407 bus runs every 30 minutes. If you are coming from the hotel and you are going into town, the 407 bus stop is on the Headford Road beside Terryland Shopping Centre (Dunnes Stores) and it takes you to Eyre Square stop 2. If you are coming from town and you are going to the hotel, the 407 is at stop 2 on Eyre Square you get off at the bus stop on the Headford Road across from Terryland Shopping Centre (Dunnes Stores).

    How far away is the hotel from the City Centre?

    The hotel is located just a 15/20-minute walk to the city centre. There are taxis available at the touch of a button that cost between 6-9 euro and there is also a bus stop located just outside the hotel with all bus times available at reception.

    No, the only animals allowed within the hotel are service dogs.

    How can I upgrade my stay?

    Upgrade your stay to an Executive Room for €40 or a Superior King Room for €20 on your check-in or with our reservations team directly.

    What payment options are available at Maldron Hotel Sandy Road Galway?

    We accept all major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard and American Express. We also accept Debit/ Laser cards. Payment can also be made by cash (the receptionist will require photographic proof of identification) and by One For All vouchers and vouchers that have been purchased through our hotel or online.
